IRONWOOD (1838) At the centre of the forest on Uluhaya stands an ironwood older than the tribe that lives beneath it. The Kaluwai call it Tuha Ulu, the Elder. In 1838 a timber company arrives with red paint, iron stakes, and a permit signed by a kingdom that has never walked this forest. They don't come to kill anyone. They come to measure. Sirai is a hunter, not a warrior. He has a pregnant wife and a brother he keeps holding back. He asks the surveyor for one tree.
