“Les clichés sont conservés”: the negatives are kept. Photo studios printed that promise on the back of their portraits: come back for a reprint, any time. The studios are gone. So are the negatives. Of the five people on these cards, not one name survived. What reached us were the things written to be read once. A postcard from Luchon, November 1943: “Dear little Nicole, I did get your dear card.” A few lines from the Col d’Aspin about the heat, the jams, and “aren’t you too lonely?” And Strasbourg, October 1960: “by way of Struthof, the death camp, it is abominable,” between two lines about fine weather. Found in Versailles, 2023. Made with my best co-author, Claude 🤍 Music: Formless Sleep by By Lotus (Epidemic Sound)
Faded vintage portraits and handwritten postcards are shown, with narration about the names and messages that were lost.
